The Art Of Money Getting By P. T. Barnum

DON’T GET ABOVE YOUR BUSINESS

There is no greater mistake than to think you will succeed with borrowed money.

Money is good for nothing unless you know the value of it by experience.

In your art of money getting remember nothing is worth anything unless it costs effort.

The rich men started out in life as poor boys, with determined wills, industry, perseverance, economy, and good habits. They went on gradually, made their own money, and saved it; this is the best way to acquire a fortune, not by waiting for “waiting for dead men’s shoes” which is the habit for many young people.

Some rich people give their children everything apart from what made them rich, and so they lose all they inherit through bad habits.

Happy is he who by listening to the experience of others avoids the rocks and shoals on which so many have been wrecked.

The great ambition should be to excel all others engaged in the same occupation.

Wherever you find a man who is most honest and intelligent that man is most sought for and has always enough to do, but those striving to get rich quickly, and do not generally do their business as substantially and thoroughly as they should, they cannot excel. Whoever excels all others in his own line is one his habits are good and his integrity undoubted, he cannot fail to secure abundant patronage, and he will be wealthy.

DO NOT SCATTER YOUR POWERS

“Engage in one kind of business only, and stick to it faithfully until you succeed, or until your experience shows that you should abandon it. A constant hammering on one nail will generally drive it home at last.”

“When a man’s undivided attention is centered on one object, his mind will constantly be suggesting improvements of value, which would escape him if his brain was occupied by a dozen different subjects at once.”

READ THE NEWSPAPERS

  • To be thoroughly posted in regard to the transactions of the world read a trustworthy newspaper.
  • He who is without a newspaper is cut off from his species.
  • He who doesn’t consult the newspapers will soon find himself and his business left out in the cold and will fail in art of money getting.

BEWARE OF “OUTSIDE OPERATIONS”

Successful people should never forget how hard they worked to achieve what they have; one should beware of “outside operations” those are operations that are suggested by people with a promise to bring a “rich harvest” there lies a danger particularly when one is not familiar with the suggested business, most of them are ill and will jeopardize a fortune that one earned in a legitimate way.

Investing in a business you don’t understand is ill- you lose money.
